Denise Randall for
Guilderland Town Justice
Denise Randall became Guilderland’s first female Town Justice in 2005.
“Each and every day we strive to deliver Justice and to find constructive ways to protect Guilderland” says Judge Randall. “Justice is more than the name of our Court; it is also our mandate and our work product. That means Justice for victims and defendants alike. Justice translates into an improved quality of life for our town.”
Since being elected, Judge Randall has increased Court supervision of young, non-violent, first-time offenders, as well as defendants in domestic violence cases. “The Office of Court Administration has found that increased judicial oversight in these types of cases results in better outcomes and a reduction in repeat offenders. It is more work for the Court in the short run, but better for the community in the long run” according to Judge Randall.
Statistics from the Office of Court Administration show that Guilderland Justice Court is now the third busiest court in Albany County, with a demanding criminal calendar. Last year Guilderland Justice Court closed 11,000 matters, generated almost $900,000 in revenue for the State of New York, and returned a profit of over $100,000 to the Town of Guilderland. Projected revenues for 2009 are in excess of $1,000,000.
Judge Randall has introduced administrative improvements to Guilderland Justice Court resulting in increased efficiency and accessibility. Additionally, the Court’s business practices have been improved. Judge Randall has also worked closely with the Office of Court Administration and the Guilderland Police in addressing Court security issues.
Because Judge Randall has her law practice in Guilderland, she is available for arraignments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “An arrest can occur at 2 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning. Law enforcement personnel need to have access to a Judge at all hours of the day and night. Because I work in Guilderland, on weekdays I can be in court within 30 minutes of a call from an officer. And because I live so close to court, I can be there in less than 20 minutes nights and weekends.”
This is extremely crucial to law enforcement. If a Town Judge is not available, the defendant must be taken to another court to be arraigned. This results in Guilderland officers being taken off of the road for long periods of time and increases costs. The current Guilderland Judges make themselves available for arraignments.
Judge Randall has close ties to Guilderland where she has lived for almost 30 years. Among her volunteer activities are Judge for the Farnsworth Middle School Moot Court; volunteer driver for Community Caregivers; and Chair of the Annual Junior Book Award at Guilderland High School. She is a member of Christ the King Church.[img_assist|nid=289|title=|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=250|height=167]
She is married to Robert “Randy” Randall; they have two children, Griffan and Jordan, and 2 family dogs, Molly, a Scottie, and Sophie, a Westie.
“My pledge to the citizens of Guilderland is that I will continue to work tirelessly on their behalf to achieve Justice for all.”
