This is a a unique year for New Yorks race for United States Senator because both U.S. Senators for the state are up for re-election.
Charles "Chuck" Schumer is the senior senator for New York and is running for his third term in the Senate.
Kirsten Gillibrand was appointed to her seat in the Senate by Governor David Paterson to fill the seat vacated by Senator Hillary Clinton when she became Secretary of State in the Barack Obama Administartion.
Since this is the first senatorial election since that appointment, the seat held by Senator Gillibrand will be filled with a special election. The winner of the special election will complete the term that will end in January 2013. The seat will then be up for election to a full six-year term with an election to take place in November 2012.
The Guilderland Democratic Committee endorses both Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand for re-election.
