Al was born and raised in Albany, New York and was educated in parochial schools in Albany. He graduated from Siena College with a Bachelor of Business Administration and earned his CPA license in 1980
He worked for the State of New York as an auditor before leaving civil service for private practice and is currently the principal in the firm of Allen F. Maikels, CPA.
Al has served the Guilderland Community in many volunteer capacities. He was a board member of the Living Resources Corporation for 20 years. He has been the Race Director for the Race for the Cure since 1994; the event has raised over 2 million dollars for local breast cancer programs.
Active in the business community, Al is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Albany County Business Development Corporation, administrators of the Al Tech Loan Fund. He has also served as a member and treasurer of the Albany Airport Authority and represented Westmere in the Albany County Legislature from 2000 through May 2004. He has also served on the Zoning Board of Appeals since 2007.
Al has been a member of the Guilderland Democratic Committee for many years and treasurer since 2007. He is a Committeeman in Election District 10. He has also served as campaign treasurer for numerous local and federal election campaigns.
Al lives in the Westmere area and has two children, Allen and Mary Beth, that were educated in the Guilderland schools.
